In This Month's Cortex

At this very moment, somewhere, there is probably a boss-type who is banging on a conference table, shouting to the room and into a conference phone: “Bring me more AI projects! The next person who suggests allocating budget for anything, even a pencil, that doesn’t have AI in it somewhere, is fired!”

Naturally, the executives will scurry out of the room, then blast out instructions to their managers that they had better start searching for AI solutions to all of the things that they used to do without AI.

Unfortunately their search for AI will land on an infinite number of results. Here’s a plan: go look at the websites of the stodgy old vendors that we already used from before AI, figure out what exactly we were doing with them, and then buy or build the AI that can do that.

Wait a minute – when you get to their websites, every single one of them is doing AI now! Not only that, every one of them claims to be some combination of the first, leading, easiest, best rated, and most powerful AI vendor in their space.

To figure it out, let’s hire someone who’s been on the leading edge of AI for 5-10 years. Lots of resumes say they did in the career site.

Uh-oh. AI is literally everywhere, and everyone’s doing it. It’s a no-win situation.

What is our hapless hierarchy going to do now?

How about we all stop saying AI at the same time?

If all of us made up our minds to stop saying AI, stop mentioning it, stop typing it, I think we could actually get out of this mess we’ve allowed ourselves to put ourselves in.

I’m serious. Don’t. Say. A. I. Ever. Again.

All of a sudden, we just won’t talk about it anymore. Then all the things that were AI-something, and the companies that were going to rebrand and put somethingAI at the end of their names, we can just call them whatever they were before.

Now, I’m not talking about AI going away. No, no, it’s way too late for that. We’re already soaking in it, and it will eventually consume something like half the energy output of the world.

Instead, we will simply assume every product company, application vendor or service provider that has somehow survived the last three years must already be doing AI by now, and since it is ubiquitous, we will be allowed to move on with our lives from there.

No more worrying about getting left behind by the competition because of AI. No more fear of missing out on the big AI party. Let’s start our own party... [Read the whole Cortex on Intellyx.com.]

XTDB: Data Compliance Assurance with Bitemporality

BrainBlog for JUXT, by Jason Bloomberg

In the first three installments of this series of articles, my colleague Eric Newcomer and I made the case for bitemporal databases.

In the first installment, Eric introduced the central challenge of data compliance: how traditional relational databases struggle to keep track of how values change over time.

followed up with an explanation of how the everyday UPDATE and DELETE operations so familiar to database professionals are inherently flawed, as they erase any information about the previous state of the data they overwrite.

In the third article, Eric explored the bitemporality challenge in depth ... [Read the BrainBlog here.]

There are times when current events trump the relentless progress of innovation, causing us to reassess what software could actually do to help companies and countries respond to global economic shocks.

That’s why I came to Las Vegas last week for Epicor Insights 2025. I have heard from plenty of software platform and cloud infrastructure players who are all-in on artificial intelligence, but I was curious about how AI might have an impact on global supply chains — which encompass pretty much any good the world makes, moves or sells.

Indeed, despite all the recent talk about tariffs somehow bringing manufacturing back, the real problem to solve here isn’t a lack of jobs. “In the U.S. we see about 5 million jobs unfilled in the supply chain, and 25% of plants reported they were underperforming due to a skilled labor shortage,” said Vaibhav Vohra, president ...

If you’ve been working in enterprise software most of your life like me, then artificial intelligence (AI) might seem like the next inevitable disruptive wave that is going to wash over our industry whether we want it or not, leaving good people’s careers in its wake.

But just like factory automation hasn’t replaced the need for skilled auto workers, and self-driving trucks still can’t replace skilled drivers from first mile to last, we’ll wind up in a situation where advanced systems will only increase the scale and complexity of IT work. Humans will need to learn new skills and stay in the loop, to keep applications as performant as possible ahead of increasing demand.

No aspect of enterprise software reflects this trend more than the mainframe modernization journey we’re on right now ... [Read the whole article here.]

Cracking the Code for Java on the Mainframe

BrainBlog for BMC, by Jason Bloomberg

COBOL remains the dominant programming language on the mainframe, but Java® is making substantial inroads on COBOL’s popularity.

According to the 2024 BMC Mainframe Survey, developers are writing 64 percent of new mainframe applications in Java – and they are rewriting a remarkable 55 percent of existing applications in the language as well.

Clearly, mainframe operators must treat Java as a first-class mainframe participant by leveraging appropriate tooling ... [Read the whole BrainBlog here.]

Legacy mainframe code can be a major modernization roadblock. Now generative AI allows clearer understanding, simpler refactoring, and less risky updates. Read this Intellyx eBook to take the fear out of mainframe transformation.

At first glance, as you wander onto this expansive Moscone Center expo floor, witness some of the near-million-dollar booths, you might wonder if the only kind of budget consideration on the chief information security officer’s mind is something related to responding to new artificial intelligence threats with AI agents — or perhaps worrying about monster trucks or goats crushing or eating a user’s mobile phone.

But beyond the glitz, AI agents can barely scratch the surface on the shortage of skilled cybersecurity talent available to address the exploits our software faces today. In this regard, newer AI-based security tools are really just the next incremental boost in automation toward protecting an exponentially expanding attack surface exacerbated by AI.

Attending the 34th annual RSAC 2025 in San Francisco with 44,000 others, I really started to understand why the organizers would pick a theme like “Many Voices. One Community.” It will take people from different walks of life, many of whom did not envision themselves as cybersecurity professionals, working together ... • AI, observability, and automation tools that drive operational excellence
  • Holistic cybersecurity protection and risk management features
  • Efficient storage and management of enterprise data at scale
  • Simplified hybrid cloud integration through open standards and frameworks.

To take advantage of these you will want to develop modernized DevX and DevOps processes and to explore value add vendor and Open Source Software partnerships. Jason Bloomberg (Managing Partner at Intellyx) discusses this here. I am fairly confident that AI will be a key part of modernizing the mainframe – and, in particular, of finding out what your heritage codebase actually does. This means that the AI capabilities of z17 could be very useful.
